Coastal and Nautical Home Decor

Coastal home decor is timeless and always in style primarily because of the relaxed approach with fabrics and textiles. Natural elements are also a staple of coastal and nautical home decor. My personal style leans more toward the nautical because of my love of the time my husband and I spent sailing on Lake Erie and Lake Ontario.

You can bring coastal or nautical decor to your home by using the right colors. You can’t go wrong with neutrals, but incorporating the colors of the sea, the sand and the sky will fulfill your coastal look. When decorating something fun like a child’s room or a nursery, you can get a little more creative incorporating items like ship wheels and porthole windows. If you want to go a little more nautical than coastal, think tufted leather sofas and pops of navy blue. Going more coastal, opt for white slipcovered sofas and crisp white or soft baby blues!

This was the nursery that I decorated for my two granddaughters. One of the little touches I did which you could use to add nautical home décor was to use boat cleats as the holder for the curtain tiebacks. You can visit a specialty store or just order the cleats on Amazon like I did!

This fun anchor light is similar to one I put in my granddaughters’ room. This is just perfect for a kid’s room, isn’t it?

A pouf is a functional piece that is a creative way to provide a little extra seating wherever you might need it. This one with blue and white stripes is designed for indoors or out.

The woven jute this pouf is covered with fit with a casual relaxed style. This one is only $70, available from Target, also.

Another easy way to carry through your nautical theme is with decorative items. I have a very large sailboat model that sits in an opening between my living room from the family room. If you have a spot for it, a sailboat model like the one above is a great accent piece. This large sailboat can be found on Wayfair along with this attractive smaller one.

These fun ticking stripe set of napkins, placemats and table runner can be found at Target.

One of the opportunities I had to shop for nautical pieces for my home was in Southampton, New York at Hildreth’s Home Goods.  Hildreth’s carries nautical furniture, hostess gifts and toys, and everything tabletop.  They had candles and sewing supplies, lamps and area rugs, everything you might need for decorating your home.

They say it best in this sign which I spotted as I walked down the stairs from one of their furniture galleries.    There is such history in this great store that has been operated by the same family for 13 generations, opening in 1842.

Look at the array of seafaring inspired linens!  I could be happy with winning the lottery and heading here to shop! I didn’t know where to begin!

If you find yourself in the Hamptons, make sure you include a stop at Hildreth’s Home Goods.  This is the perfect place to find all the coastal and nautical home decor items you could want, and then some! …and if you have a special little someone, you might want to add this to your shopping list!
