One of my dear friends is celebrating a birthday very soon, and I decided I would put together a little gift to make him smile. He loves my nutmeg sugar cookies – so, I decided I would bake a plate of cookies for him. I headed to Walmart to pick up the baking ingredients and while I was there I stopped in the Hallmark card section to grab a card to go along with his plate of cookies.
Did you know that Hallmark has cards starting at just .47 cents? And they have a really big variety, it is not just an end cap! I found out Walmart is the only store that has Hallmark cards at such a low price. I checked my Facebook account for upcoming birthdays and I began to stock up. When you can make someone smile and it only costs .47, why wouldn’t you?  One of the first cards I chose was a fun card with the word CELEBRATE simply filing the front of the card – and it was quite fitting for me to be giving this card. I decided this would be my inspiration for the cookies. I have alphabet cookie cutters and decided I would create the word CELEBRATE with the cookies.
The recipe for the cookies has been handed down in my family for generations. It isn’t 100% sugar cookie and it isn’t a butter cookie, but it is 100% incredibly delicious. I like them plain, but my sister describes them as a delivery system for the frosting.  I use a plain buttercream frosting for them and sometimes that is all, but sometimes, like here, they get all dolled up with sprinkles and candies.
- 1 Cup Butter
- 1-1/2 Sugar
- 2 eggs, beaten
- 4 C. Flour
- 3 t. baking powder
- 1 t. salt
- 1/8 t. baking soda
- 2 t. nutmeg
- 1/4 C sour milk (1 t. vinegar in regular milk makes sour milk)
- Cream butter and add sugar gradually
- Add beaten eggs to the butter/sugar mixture
- Sift the flour
- Add baking powder, soda, salt and nutmeg to the sifted flour
- Add the flour mixture alternately with milk to the egg mixture
- Roll into sheet a small portion at a time, cut out cookies
- Place on a parchment paper lined baking sheet
- Bake at 370 degrees F. for 10 minutes.
- Makes 6 dozen (depending upon upon the size of your cutters) Can also be used in cookie press. Can be colored to make christmas trees, etc. I decorate mine with buttercream frosting.
I think this was the perfect little gift and card to let my friend know that I wanted to celebrate him! Â He is going to love his cookies and we will enjoy celebrating together.

What a thoughtful way to celebrate a friend’s birthday but in a budget friendly way! I love that the card inspired the cookies too! #client
Thank you Kelly!
I didn’t realize Walmart had a collection of cards that inexpensive. I’ll have to check it out. Hallmark’s headquarters is in Kansas City where I live. Love the fun cookies and I pinned your recipe to try sometime.
The cookies are not to be missed, Dawn! Let me know what you think when you try them!
