Faux Snow Projects!

With all of my Christmas decorating finished and my bags packed for a family celebration in New York City, it is time for me to begin thinking about craft projects for January.  In Florida we don’t get snow and frigid temperatures, but that doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy some fun faux snow projects!

I began my first project with three plain canning jars.  Make sure your jars are clean and dry inside and out.

I used three snow-tipped pinecones for each jar.  I used simple string to tie a knot around the top of each of the pinecones as shown above.  Simply tie each of the pinecones to the top of the jar like I did above.  I filled my jars about 1/4 of the way full with epsom salts, added a little tea light candle and have a beautiful winter centerpiece to add a warm glow to my tabletop.  Setting my jars on a fun fur throw adds to the winter ambiance.  Who would’t enjoy sitting down to this table sometime this winter?  I wanted to try a couple of different techniques and see what different looks I got from them, so I picked up some glass containers from my local dollar store.  I brushed on a generous amount of Mod Podge with a sponge brush and rolled this container in some of the artificial snow that is made from recycled plastic containers.  After letting the Mod Podge dry and adding a battery operated tea light to this one, I got an icy look, but again, a nice soft glow.  I know it looks like there is no “snow” over the spot where the candle “flame” is, but it is just too bright to see it there.  Make sure you do not use an open flame with this kind of artificial snow, as it can melt or possibly burn.I finished off by spraying with a coat of Krylon Triple-Thick Crystal Clear Glaze.  For a different look you could go back to the epsom salt crystals I used in my three canning jars.  For the candle above I used a fine layer of Mod Podge, sprinkled the epsom salts on the entire candle and then let dry.  I sprayed the same clear glaze over this to set the epsom salt crystals.  I think the transformation from dollar store candle to snowy glow light is magical!  

Since I had all of the supplies out, I kept on going, trying different looks with my faux snow!  I took one of my canning jars and painted it with Krylon white semi-gloss paint and while the paint was wet, I sprinkled some of the epsom salts on it.  I can just see this with some bright fresh flowers in it as a pretty vase on my kitchen counter!  A touch of winter with the hope of spring!  Get going and have some fun with some faux snow projects of your own!
