Halloween Mantel Decor

I am ready for Halloween and today I am sharing my Halloween mantel decor!  Last year the birds invaded my front porch.  I think over the past year they died and all that was left was skeletons of the birds and a buzzard looking for any leftovers.halloweenmantel-decor

I have this big television above my mantel which is convenient for watching but not so convenient for decorating for the holidays.  You can see the fireplace in its normal state back when we first shiplapped it here.   With some help from my Dad, I took a large art canvas and added some trim to it so it can hang over the television easily for holiday decor.  I covered the canvas with purple fabric for my Halloween decor.

Once I put the purple up there, I realized it looked very dark, so I added some gauzy fabric from the Dollar Tree to lighten it up.  detail-of-a-chalky-painted-frame

To that I added one of my Ikea plastic frames which I had painted a with a chalky gray spray paint. The gray color and the chalky finish both add to the spookiness of the frame. The focal point of the frame is a large bat skeleton that I found at Target.

I left a couple of my coastal jars, two on my mantel and one on the hearth.  I found scraps of trees from local landscapers and sprayed them all black.  The “ball-moss” we find on trees in Florida looks extra creepy when painted black, kind of like spiders.  Taking the time to find the right branches is what helped it look as if the branches are framing my entire display.  After arranging my branches in the bottles I took some black and white leaves I got from Michael’s, cut off the individual leaves and hot glued them sparingly to the branches.  skeleton-halloween-mantel-decor

I had both the black and white pumpkins and the ornate black frame that I added to the mantel.  The image of the black raven in the frame is from The Graphics Fairy.  If you have never browsed around her website, you really should check it out!creepy-birds-for-halloween-decor

One big buzzard that is not yet to skeleton stage is paying homage to the deceased bat and watching over a tiny bird skeleton.a-buzzard-and-a-little-bird-skeleton-for-halloween-decor

One of my favorite parts of my Halloween mantel is my skull garland.  I threaded my skulls on black tulle to make a garland.  Check out the Halloween Skull Garland DIY tutorial for details.  a-skull-garland-for-halloween

To enhance the garland I added small arrangements of purple and black flowers with purple bats and black sparkly spiders, also from Dollar Tree.  A coordinating arrangement sits on the center of the mantel.  halloween-decorations-for-your-mantel

    1. Thanks Danielle! The best part is that part can be taken down and put back up easily! Someday I will have that fireplace re-done and have the tv recessed with some barn doors or something like that hiding it!

  1. Chloe, your mantle is amazing and so creative.I usually do mine with crows but I think I will add a buzzard thanks to your inspiration.

  2. How about a beautiful fall mantle? We no longer have children at home, not one trick or treaters ever comes by, and our granddarlins live out of town so we don’t do Halloween anymore, however, fall is my favorite season because it is my favorite mix of colors and, drumroll please…it is finally cooling down here in NW FL! Summers are miserable and I do think this one was one of the worse in years!

  3. You did it again Chloe…..the mantel is perfectly scary. Great idea with the cover for the TV and you can change the color of your backdrop by draping another color over the purple or do you have it so you can do that already?
    Either way, good job.
    Hugs

  4. Once more Chloe you did not disappoint. A very creative way to hide the TV. Nice display all in all.; as somebody mentioned it earlier, my favorite piece is the buzzard. Neat Job!
