A Kentucky Derby Party

The Kentucky Derby is more than a month away, but my past Kentucky Derby posts are being pinned like crazy, so an awful lot of people must be be planning Kentucky Derby parties this year.  I love to host a Derby party so I set up my table and prepared some of the foods I will be preparing for this year’s Kentucky Derby fete.

A Kentucky Derby Party

Celebrating the Kentucky DerbyMy horse sculpture seems to always make an appearance at my Derby parties.  For this one, he has donned a tiny top hat to celebrate the occasion. The rest of the year he can be seen in my equestrian themed guest room.

It is Derby Day for this Kentucky Derby Party

Run for the Roses TablescapeThe centerpiece of my table is the old toolbox I found at Renningers ,filled with artificial greenery and red silk roses.  I rested it on a mat of moss and surrounded it with moss covered balls and silver trophies.  The I blank wood planks I bought with plans to make it into a sign sometime soon, but for this table, the letters spelling out RUN seemed like perfect way to decorate it.

A Kentucky Derby Party TablescapeBourbon cocktail meatballs seem like a perfect accompaniment to a Kentucky Derby party.  Sharp cheddar cheese on crackers with Southern pecans and Benedictine spread sandwiches are delectable finger foods.

Serving up Mint Juleps for a Kentucky Derby PartyI am so bad, I certainly didn’t need a new silver tray but when I saw this one with the horse heads on it at Home Goods, I knew it was coming home with me!  I am going to have to figure out what to do with it the rest of the year to justify the purchase, even though it was a bargain!  Are you a Home Goods junkie, too?

Mint Julep Bar at a Kentucky Derby PartyFor the Mint Julep Bar I set out all the ingredients and added this fun chalkboard with the recipe on it for anyone who might need to know how to make one.  We don’t make Mint Juleps every day!

Setting the table for a Kentucky Derby party.I chose to leave my table naked for this table thinking that the natural wood mixes well with my more rustic take on a Kentucky Derby party.  Combining the elements of green with the moss and the boxwood orbs as a contrast to the shiny silver platters gives me the feeling that this is a party set at the racetrack but with an elegant touch.

A Kentucky Derby Party Table is set for the Run for the RosesI am having fun finding new ways to use the chalkboard panels I picked up at the Antique Extravaganza, this time using letters I got at WalMart and painting them bright red.  I didn’t realize until later that the “B” was a different font.

Pecan Pie is perfect for a Kentucky Derby PartyI finished off my table with a pecan pie, but I think for my actual party I will serve up pecan tarts to keep the party a little more finger food friendly.  Are you planning a Kentucky Derby party?  What is your favorite thing about a Derby party?  The food?  The hats, or maybe just the Mint Juleps?
