A Toile and Topiary Tablescape
There is something timelessly charming about a table inspired by the garden. Soft green toile, terracotta pots, leafy layers, and simple topiaries come together to create a setting that feels both elegant and wonderfully relaxed. For this tablescape, I wanted the table to feel as though it had naturally evolved over time — the kind of setting you might discover on the veranda of an English country home, surrounded by summer greenery and lingering conversation. By layering botanical patterns with natural textures and fresh shades of green, this table became a celebration of simple details that quietly make a beautiful statement.

Look who can’t miss a moment in the spotlight! Lily is loving her big backyard! She keeps an eye on the deer back in the woods and her favorite game is having me throw her balls from up on the deck down to the yard!

I always love capturing the close-up details of a table setting like this because it’s where the personality of the table truly comes to life. The soft texture of the linen tablecloth, the leafy geranium-shaped plates, the rattan-wrapped glassware, and the bamboo-handled flatware all work together to create layers of warmth and texture. It’s these collected details that give a table depth and make it feel welcoming, relaxed, and beautifully lived in rather than overly formal.

One of the things I am loving most about our new home is the beautiful natural backdrop it provides for outdoor entertaining. The lush greenery of the wooded landscape behind the house gently slopes down toward a peaceful lake, creating the perfect setting for an outdoor table. It feels private, serene, and wonderfully connected to nature — almost as though the scenery itself becomes part of the tablescape.

I always love including a small favor or gift for guests at the table. Keeping with the soft green palette and the simple charm of the mulberry topiaries, each place setting is adorned with a small potted lavender plant for guests to take home. Not only does the lavender add another layer of natural texture and color to the table, but it also leaves each guest with a little reminder of the gathering long after the evening ends.

Do you think this green toile tablecloth was absolutely perfect for this table? Well… I certainly did when I spotted it at Home Sense and immediately brought it home with me. I loved the way the soft green pattern looked against the backdrop of the trees beyond the deck, so I left it out to enjoy for the week.
A week later, I walked outside and discovered that the sun had completely bleached the green from the entire top portion of the tablecloth! The sections hanging over the sides were still beautifully green, while the tabletop had transformed into a soft brown neutral instead. Thankfully, I happened to spot another one at Home Sense today and quickly grabbed it.
Now I’ve decided I may just lean into the happy accident. I’m going to spread the first cloth out completely and let the rest of it fade naturally so I’ll end up with both a green toile tablecloth and a warm brown version. Honestly, it feels a little like the decorating gods decided I needed two looks instead of one!

A funny little story about these sweet mulberry topiaries — I first spotted them at a garden center during a recent trip to Ohio. I walked past them several times, debating whether I really needed them, only to find myself thinking about them over and over again. Eventually, I decided they simply had to come home with me… which also meant figuring out how to bring them back on the plane! Somehow, those charming little topiaries made the trip safely, and now I cannot imagine this table without them.
