October is here and it is time for me to get my fall decorating done! It is now or never! I really love this time of year and I like to add a personal touch to my front porch decor. I wanted something full and lush to welcome guests to my home this fall. I figured out this unique way to decorate my outdoor entryway.
Make the base:
I started with 3 pieces of styrofoam that are about 2 inches deep by about 2 inches wide and almost thirty six inches long. After cutting my 3 strips of styrofoam, I needed to attach a hook to the top of 2 of the pieces and one to the middle of one of the strips.
I need to make sure my hooks are secure, so I took half of a pipe cleaner and coiled it as shown below.
I bent a wire in half and pushed both ends through my coil (this will keep the wire from cutting through the foam).
On the back side of my foam I used a button method to keep the wire from cutting through the foam. After pulling the wire through the button I twisted the two ends into a circle to use to hang my foam from a Command hook
.
Here is how my two pieces of styrofoam look hanging on each side of my front door. I used Command brand outdoor hooks to suspend my styrofoam strips.
Start decorating:
Now it is time for the fun! I began by adding fall flowers to the styrofoam. Most of these went right into the foam and held securely. If there were anything that did not feel like it was secure, I used my glue gun on low temperature to secure those items.
I kept the flowers and the fall leaves toward the front of the styrofoam for the most show. After adding the fall foliage and fall blooms, I began adding an assortment of pumpkins and a variety of gourds.
To keep my decorations narrow alongside my front door, I simply used low temperature hot glue and a package of Dollar Tree fall leaves to hide the edges of the styrofoam.
I repeated this process for each side of the front door and then for the third piece of foam for over the top of my front door. I will finish off my front porch with corn stalks on my railings, a fall welcome mat and a plaid throw on one of my chairs. I could have added a front door wreath, but styled a swag full of fall blooms and faux pumpkins to coordinate with my decoration around the door frame.
Pin one of these!
This is so full, much more so than the usual garland! I am ready to greet guests from now until Thanksgiving! This isn’t just for fall, use this same technique for any season or holiday! There is plenty of inspiration still to be discovered for easy fall decor, just check out more projects here!

Love this but I don’t understand the pipe cleaner thing….
Thank you Sandra! The little coil of pipe cleaner is just to keep the wire from cutting through the styrofoam. You could use the button like I did on the back of the foam, or even a little stick, but if you don’t use something under the wire, against the foam, the wire will just pull through the foam. If you watch the first few minutes of this video, you will see a live demo of the how to..https://www.facebook.com/celebratedecorate/videos/1766782280047108/
Thanks for adding the video link! It helped a lot!
What is the door and paint colors of house….so pretty
The house is cliffside gray from Benjamin Moore and the door is Under the Big Top, also from Benjamin Moore.
I really like this idea
Thank you so much Jeanette! I am so happy with how it turned out!
Love it!
Thank you Lynne!!
Chloe,
Last year we invested in new Andersen Exterior and Storm Doors. The glass has an E rating to reduce damage from the sun on these east facing windows. I want to resume hanging my Seasonal Festive wreaths, but can get any real answers about how to hang on these specially coated glass windows. I was hoping the 3M removable hooks would work, but can’t get any straight answers. (The Anderson representative in Manila had never heard of them…) What do you suggest?
Have you tried one of the Command outdoor hooks? I don’t have those kind of windows, but I have had all kinds of success with them!
A metal or plastic wreath hook (I use a metal one) will hang over the top of the storm door and it will still close.. That is what I do for wreaths on mine. And, I have also put Command adhesive on my Andersen Replacement windows and see no problem after. I do not however, leave them there after the season. (Ours are storm doors are new Andersen as well.)
Do you have glass in the door… there is a very strong magnet that you place one on the inside and the one on the outside has a hook on it… Very Very Strong,,, you almost need a screw drive to pry them apart. The stay on the window.
Hi Jeri! I know about those magnets. I do’t have a glass door, so I just have a Command hook on my door!
Lowes has a new magnetic wreath holder. You will need someone to be on the inside of the window. There are two wreath magnets. One will be inside and one outside. When you each hold the magnet up to the spot on the window it is going to be it creates a spot for you to hang your wreath
Sug, you just knocked another one out of the ballpark !
Thanks so much Daisy!
How very clever and festive for fall Chloe! Well done.
Thanks so much Debee!
What a great idea, Chloe! I love the full and lush autumn look. Thanks for sharing and Happy Friday!
Thank you Pam, I really wanted something fuller than a garland this year!
Nice job, Chloe. That looks great.
Thank you Rita!
You really have the most creative idea! WOW!! Love it!!
Thank you so much Bird!
Chloe where can I get the same size foam?
I cut mine from a slab of Styrofoam. You can find the big sheets or slabs at any craft store, and sometimes at Walmart.
What a great idea! I could see this concept being used for other seasons, too.
Thank you, Joy, I will be using it for Christmas, too!
Love it Chloe and I must say brilliant. It looks fabulous.
Hugs
Thanks so much Kari!
Wow, that’s a statement and I love it!
Thank you so much!
Very creative idea Chloe. Pinned to several boards.
Hi Chloe.
Simply those words: Lush, Rich and Beautiful.
Beautiful idea, and I will am going to use it.
Thank you so much Diana!
I love it!! However I do have a couple questions. I see where you had the command hooks at the top on either side of the door, but how do you attach the bottom to hold in place and how did you hang the one above the door?
I thought I would need to attach the side ones at the bottom, but they seem to be heavy enough they have not blown in the wind at all. You could attach a Command hook upside down below the styrofoam and make another wire hook attached to the bottom of each decoration and hook it onto the the upside down hook to secure it if needed. The one across the top of the door was hung with the same kind of hangers, one on each end with similar hooks in the ends of the top styrofoam.
Love this! Could think of doing this for christmas too! Plastic ormanments, Or artifical fruit and greens. I used some double faced tape on the bottom to secure. Just a small piece seemed to do the trick.
I will be doing something similar for Christmas myself!
Are you able to show a picture of how this is done without it being filled? I mean, its obviously laid the across, but how?
I will be doing a video of this and sharing it. I will try to remember to send you the link when the video goes live.
Beautiful! How did you make the center piece on the door?
Thank you Kathy! Here is a tutorial on a fall swag I made for the door last year, it would be similar to the one I did this year:http://celebrateanddecorate.com/fall-swag-front-door/
So very creative and pretty.
What a beautiful statement look for your front door. Love your projects and your tutorials are the best
Did you put leaves on both sides of the styrofoam or only one. And also, did you have to cut your styrofoam. I could not locate any strips the size you used.
I put leaves on both sides. I just cut styrofoam from a big sheet.
What kept the wind from ripping out the flowers and leaves off the styrofoam. Did you use low temp glue on each stem when you placed it. Beautiful!!
Hi Shelia, I have had no trouble with the stems coming out of the styrofoam. I did not use glue on them at all. Thank you.
This has to be the prettiest fall decorations I ever seen. Where did you buy your flowers especially the sunflowers? I have been hunting for similar ones and I can’t find them.
Thank you so much Toni! I bought the flowers at a variety of stores, Joann’s Hobby Lobby and Michael’s. I think the sunflowers came from Joann’s.
Thank you for the info. I love this so much I have had 2 girlfriends of mine searching online wholesalers for those flowers too. I have showed the picture to a lot of my friends and they are in agreement with me about how this is sooooo beautiful
Oh my this is so cool! I usually never respond but this really is sooo beautiful
Thank you so much Rozie! I am glad you liked it!
Oh My Chloe. This is brilliant. I am going to do this with my christmas lighted garland. Think I will use U-pins to hold it in place. I can store the pieces in a plastic bag then just hang them again next year. Thank you for sharing
Thank you Cheryl, yes, this is an easy to adapt method of making full decor around your front door!
This is really beautiful. Does anyone else have the problem with flowers on or around the door attracting bugs and birds?
I don’t seem to attract any bugs or birds with my outdoor decor.
You could pull this down at the end of November and store it for next year! I love this idea and you hit a grand slam! Kudos and keep it up. We love it!
Thank you so much Deborah! It is staying up for Thanksgiving at my house! Then it will be full time Christmas!
Love the look, it’s so beautiful, also what colour is Yr front door? It’s a lovely shade of blue, not sure I could get in Ireland?.
I don’t know the exact color name. It is from Benjamin Moore, I am sure you could find a similar color or have it mixed.
Are you going to do one for Christmas?
Oh, yes! Coming soon!
I’m thinking somethin with snow men for the Winter season and maybe a Christmas one too, I can’t wait to try this!!!! I love this Idea!!!! Thanks!!!
Thank you! I have lots of other swag ideas! Check them out here on the blog! I am sure you will do a great job!
So much better than lighted Christmas garland for daytime! I’m guessing that lights could be added for night?
Total cost of project… roughly
I really used up silks I had around my house, I would say that each of the 3 pieces, one on each side and the one across the top would probably run about $30 each if you had none of the items on hand. I do love the artificial fall leaves from Dollar Tree!
How did you do the top part of the garland?
I made the top part in the same way with a piece of styrofoam across the top, secured on each end by a circle of wire and then a Command hook on my house. I will be doing something similar for Christmas!
Thank you! Can’t wait to see what you have in store for Christmas
Chloe, Thank you for sharing this. Best creative idea I’ve ever seen that is both relatively easy to do & very attractive. It looks like fun to make & then can be stored for next year! You do have impressive skills. Hope to see your Christmas one. Thank again.
Thank you so much Leah, I will be doing something similar for Christmas! Stay tuned!
Love this! Thank you for sharing. I am going to use the foam idea for a Christmas door surround. I will send you a photo when I finish putting it up the weekend after Thanksgiving. Thank you so much for sharing this great idea!
It’s beautiful. Is it expensive to get all of that decorations or did u get it in bulk?
Thank you so much Jennifer. I actually used a lot of leftover pieces I had in bins. I buy most of my things from Joann’s, Hobby Lobby and Michael’s.
I had a similar idea using those pool noodle things to make wreaths and straight flower decorations you can just cut in half
I picked some up at the dollar tree
Where did you find the long pieces of styrofoam?
I just cut it from a large sheet of styrofoam! Easy as can be!
Very pretty! I really like the blue flowers. They make it “pop”, and look great with your door color.
Thank you so much Linda, I really wanted to coordinate the fall look with the house and the blue did the trick!
I have a very small space, for my condo door. For years, I was able to hang lighted garlands, etc. around a door where I previously lived.
It seems the styro strips can really be customized, according to space concerns.
So tickled this problem is now solved! I plan to make a gorgeous Valentine display, albeit with just one strip.
I am so glad you found this and I hope that it will work for you for your Valentine’s display! Thanks for letting me know!!
I was about to take a large tv box out to the dumpster & I just couldn’t do it! I had a very long internal dialogue about the different things I could do with this box AND the perfect pieces of Styrofoam inside! (Two large sheets (I can cut to make it work). & one curved pc. that’s the perfect shape & size to hang above the door.)
I was imagining the argument I’d have to pitch against throwing it away. I almost gave in last night. That box is getting closer & closer to the front door.
***So glad I saw this pin this morning.***
Now, lets hope I can get my flowers arranged even half as beautiful as yours!
I am sure you will do a great job arranging your flowers! I am so glad you saved that! Fantastic!
Chloe this is fabulous and easy to make. How clever are you? You made yours so pretty.
Pinning.
Have a great afternoon
Cindy
Thanks so much Cindy! Thanks for pinning! My door is dressed for fall now!
What a wonderful idea! Your display looks great.
Thank you so much, Sue! I am really enjoying it, too!
Hi Chloe!
I saved this project via a Pinterest pin on one of my boards (of which there are hundreds!), then couldn’t remember which one. TODAY, I found it!
The link for the styro pieces routes to a different amazon product.
Would you please tell me where I could buy the styrofoam pieces? I am dying to do a Valentine’s garland around my door.
Looked up Floral Craft on amazon. Not there.
Thank you for your help!
Beth Crawford
Thanks for this wonderful idea! I made this for My 95 year old mom’s birthday. She adored it! I would live to post a photo but I am not sure how. I am so proud of it and was able to follow the directions very easily!
That is so wonderful. I am so happy she adored it. It makes my heart happy to know that I have shown someone how to make something and given clear enough directions that they can replicate it! I am proud of you for making it!
Hi Chloe, What do you use to attach the bottom to the wall so it won’t blow around in the wind?
A second hook and loop.
Where do I find that styrofoam???

What a smart idea! That is amazing. Thank you.
Great tutorial! I plan on trying myself. To cut down on costs I think you could also use a cheap pool noodle from the dollar store cut in half lengthwise. Those foam sheets can be expensive! 🙂
