Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream Recipe

This is not one of those no churn, easy, quick ice cream recipes.  This is “old fashioned put it in the ice cream maker (although we do use an electric one, so that might be cheating) and whip up some homemade ice cream.”  And it is not one of those fancy flavors, like pistachio or something with balsamic vinegar in it.  It’s just good old, original vanilla ice cream.  When my family started making this, my dad was just a little boy and there were no electric ice cream makers, so it was all hand cranked (thank goodness we don’t have to do that anymore).  This is one of the things my parents wanted to share with their great-granddaughters this summer.

My mom says it is best if you put the ingredients in the ice cream maker and when it is ready, you pack it in ice and leave it for awhile for the freshly made ice cream to firm up.  I don’t know who has the patience for that, particularly not this little 21 month old!  I know if you eat it as soon as the ice cream freezer stops churning it, it will melt very quickly in your bowl (or on your spoon as Zoe learned), but it is so incredibly icy, yet creamy… and delicious that I say, “open that ice cream maker and go for it!”

It looks like my granddaughter, Zoe agrees with me on “just go for it”!  If you want to make ice cream like this, you can get an electric ice cream freezer like ours right here.
