How to Make a Fresh Flower Centerpiece

Follow along and let me show you the steps to make a traditional fresh flower arrangement. This is an elegant yellow centerpiece that is perfect for a luncheon or dinner. If you struggle to arrange flowers, this should help you easily make a centerpiece!

Watch the following video that shows you how to make this centerpiece AND a pink centerpiece in a swan planter!

You can use any low waterproof container that will hold water to support your fresh flowers. I keep a number of different Dollar Tree trays handy for just this purpose. For this centerpiece you are going to want a container that is low and does not show once your arrangement is complete. Use some wet floral foam, (I used one brick and another small piece added to the end) and tape it securely to your tray with waterproof floral tape.

In a container such as this, you want to make sure that block of foam is not going to wiggle around at all. For this reason, I taped it once vertically and added two pieces horizontally.

Step One:

Take 4 pieces of your greenery and add them to your arrangement as shown below. Two longer pieces, one on each end and two shorter pieces, one on each side.

Step Two:

Next, add another piece of greenery into the floral foam between each of the pieces you have already added.

I next added six pieces of greenery to the foam, one at an angle above each of the two pieces on the side and two on an upward angle on either side of the long end pieces on each end. [see the details in photo 2 under Step Three]

Step Three:

Begin to add your flowers. I selected all yellow flowers for this centerpiece beginning with a bunch of yellow chrysanthemums.

Add one chrysanthemum (or whatever flowers you are starting with) between each of the pieces of greenery around the bottom edge. That will take eight blooms.

Next, between each of the flowers you have added, go up at and angle and add another layer of the blooms. This will take six flowers.

Continue adding flowers repeating the pattern of moving up at an angle and between each of the previous layers of flowers. You will now have the perfect shape to your centerpiece. All you need to do now is to fill in with the rest of your greenery and flowers.

The next step is to add some fluffy filler greenery. This is something I picked up from Trader Joe’s.

All you need to do is to cut apart small pieces of the greenery and add it to fill in like shown below. Add enough of the greens that the floral foam is hidden.

You will want to add some larger blooms to your arrangement. I found these pretty bright yellow gerbera daisies.

Add the larger blooms to your arrangement. Add one one each end on either side of the longest flower at the end. Repeat that on each end. Add your additional larger flowers angled up along the top edge of your centerpiece shape. I also added six yellow carnations to the arrangement. Just add all of the flowers within the shape you already have.

Finish off your arrangement with some spray roses. Cut them off in small clusters and fill in the rest of your centerpiece until you are happy with the look.

If you want you could also add some white filler flowers such as baby’s breath or statice.

It is that easy and they you have an elegant oblong and traditional centerpiece, ready to display on your table!

Make sure you add water to your arrangement to support your flowers and enjoy!
