The View from Foxglove Hill

There are some traditions that quietly become part of the fabric of a family.

This week, one of my favorites returned.

After a month away at summer camp, my daughter and I drove up to North Carolina to pick up my two granddaughters. I don’t know who was more excited—the girls, their mom, or this grandmother. There is something so special about that first hug after weeks apart and hearing all the stories that simply can’t wait another minute to be told.

As we drove home, I found myself thinking about traditions.

Some traditions are the ones we intentionally create—holiday dinners, birthday celebrations, decorating the Christmas tree together. Others seem to happen without much planning at all. They simply grow from spending time together, year after year, until one day you realize they’re part of your family’s story.

Moving to Georgia brought many changes this year, but one of the greatest gifts has been living close enough to share more of those everyday moments. Instead of squeezing memories into a few visits each year, we now have the opportunity to build a lifetime of new traditions here at Foxglove Hill.

I don’t know exactly what all of those traditions will become yet. Perhaps they’ll be afternoons baking cookies in the kitchen, decorating the porch for every season, gathering flowers from the garden, setting pretty tables just because it’s Tuesday, or watching hummingbirds from the deck as the sun begins to set.

Whatever they become, I know this much: this home isn’t just where we live. It’s where our family’s next chapter is being written, one ordinary day at a time.

And somehow, I think those ordinary days often become the memories we treasure most.

As July quietly slips into August, I find myself looking ahead to my favorite season.

Every single year I tell myself I’m going to savor every last bit of summer…and every single year I find myself pulling out fall inspiration before August has even arrived. I simply can’t help it.

There’s something about autumn that speaks to me. The rich colors, cozy textures, beautiful tables, welcoming front porches, flickering candlelight, and gatherings around the table all make my heart happy. It has always been my favorite season to decorate.

This year will be no different.

In fact, with our first autumn at Foxglove Hill just around the corner, I think I’m even more excited than usual. I can’t wait to decorate the front door, create a few new fall tablescapes, fill the house with warm seasonal touches, and begin making memories here that I hope will become traditions for years to come.

Over the next several weeks, I’ll be revisiting some of my favorite fall decorating ideas, updating older posts with fresh inspiration, and sharing plenty of new seasonal ideas along the way.

If you’re already beginning to think about fall too (don’t worry—I won’t tell anyone!), here are a few favorites to inspire you…

  1. Oh Chloe…forgive me if I don’t always comment, but you should already know I have followed you since we met that first time at Haven….how many years ago was that? And I enjoyed our collaboration with Sandra and Benita for our linking blog posts. I have to admit I was a little sad when you moved up North but can understand why you left Florida. (For some reason I was comforted knowing you were just across the way.) 🤗 I have loved watching your transitioning… especially your new choices in decor. Love it as it looks so rich and luxurious (bedroom and living room) and I know you had recently remodeled your Florida kitchen and back yard to the way you wanted it, so I am anxious to see what your new kitchen looks like, tho I haven’t seen any pics yet. 🥴 I also love your plans for the exterior of your new home and anxious to see how you will be able to incorporate all your Florida decor to a completely different styled front porch. (Your Florida front porch decorating was memorable and enviable). I also like your new sub name of Foxglove Hill…catchy name and so perfect for your expert flower decorations/centerpieces etc;!
As for me, I try to post once a week (usually on Tuesdays) on Me and My Captain, I hope you are following me to know that God has blessed me with good health tho there are restrictions. Rita has done an excellent job of hosting the blog hops, which I am sure you have noticed and we have missed your inputs. I know you are enjoying your family so close and I mourned with you your losses. So many changes life hands us but I Thank God for all the many blessings as I am sure you do too. Just wanted to touch base with you and let you know I am looking forward to seeing the rest of your new home and lifestyle. I have had to do a revamp of my blog…ugh! as a few advised their comments were not showing up and I was having hosting issues. 🥴 Please stop by the blog and we will keep in touch a bit better. Hugs always dear friend.🥰
