How to Make Hearts with Crayons and Wax Paper

These translucent hanging hearts are easy to make from waxed paper and crayons. Read on to learn how to create them and color your room with cheer.

Materials

  • Wax paper
  • Wax crayons
  • Handheld pencil sharpener
  • Kraft paper
  • Iron
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Ribbon

Step One:

Select the crayons in the colors you want to make your hearts.

Step Two:

Remove the paper from the crayons you are going to use:

Step Three:

Begin with a sheet of waxed paper large enough for the largest heart you want to make. Fold it in half along its length and score the fold, then unfold it.

Step Four:

Next, start shaving crayons with a handheld pencil sharpener onto the wax paper. Spread the shavings thickly across one half of the paper.

Step Five:

Fold the clean half of the paper over the shavings. Crimp the three open edges with a 1/2-inch fold to keep the shavings from melting out of the wax paper.

Step Six

Protect your ironing surface with kraft paper. Use at least two layers of kraft paper both beneath and above the wax paper. Place the waxed paper on the kraft paper, and cover it with two more sheets of kraft paper. Iron lightly on medium heat, checking after every few passes. Stop when all the shavings have melted. Let cool.

Step Seven:

Trace and cut out hearts of various sizes. String each heart with a fine ribbon and hang them in a window.

Your completed project!

      1. Absolutely do not do this for outside decor in a warm to hot state. They are thin and melt to a big mess. Even thicker will. Otherwise totally awesome.
