Halloween is over and I am now looking forward to Thanksgiving and all of the family time the holidays will bring.  Today I am sharing these adorable Nutter Butter turkeys that would be a delightful setting on everyone’s plate as they sit down to a Thanksgiving dinner.

How to Create Turkeys using Nutter Butter Cookies

I headed out to Walmart to pick up Nutter Butter cookies and some different candies to make these cute little turkeys.  It is great that at Walmart I could get everything I need for this project in one stop.  Nutter Butter TurkeysWhen you sit down to give thanks and spot one of these little fellows sitting at your place, you have to just smile, don’t you?  These guys are so easy to put together and older kids will have fun helping out, too!

Supplies for making Nutter Butter TurkeysFirst I gathered all of my ingredients together:

  • Nutter Butter Cookies by Nabisco (3 cookies for every Turkey) Make sure to grab a coupon for Nutter Butter Cookies at Walmart!
  • Chocolate Candy Melts (about 5 ounces)
  • Chocolate Famous Wafer Cookies by Nabisco
  • Assorted Candy Corn Flavors/Colors
  • Candy Eyes
  • Peach Ring Gummy Candies
  • Tiny Size Chewy Candies (orange)

Making Turkey Tails with Candy CornI melted my chocolate in the microwave on 30% power for a minute at a time, stirring after each minute.  It only took two minutes to reach the consistency I needed.  I was using my chocolate to “glue” together all of the parts.  I began by putting down a chocolate wafer cookie and using the candy corn as feathers, I dipped them into the chocolate and stuck them down on the wafer cookie as shown above.  I ended up using 9 pieces of candy corn for each tail, but this is totally your own artistic license.

Nutter Butter Cookie with eyeballsNext it was time to give some personality to my birds, and there is nothing like silly eyes to give personality to an animal… or a person.  You can use mini candy coated chocolates for eyes, but I always like to go for the candy eyes.  You should be able to find these cute candy eyes right at Walmart, too.  Using the same technique as for the feathers, I dipped the back of the eyes into the melted chocolate and stuck them to the Nutter Butter Cookies.  They look cute already, don’t they?

Candies for Turkey BeaksNow for the beak, because a turkey has to have a beak to eat so he can get nice and fat for Thanksgiving, naturally! No one wants a skinny turkey!  I used square chewy candies, and picked out the orange ones.  You could certainly use yellow ones, too.  I just cut each one into quarters and used the melted chocolate to adhere them.

Giving Your Turkey a WattleOne more addition to their faces and these turkeys will be ready for tails!  Now, I have learned quite a bit about turkeys during this project and we are now going to add a wattle.  Only the males have large distinctive wattles, so I guess I am making all male turkeys here.  Evidently a wattle is a caruncle (not to be confused with your uncle’s car).  Lexic.us defines a caruncle as: “A small, fleshy excrescence that is a normal part of an animal’s anatomy.”  You really didn’t need to know that, did you?  Okay, I am adding the wattle and cutting it from a peach gummy candy.  Make this as big or small as you like, it depends how many female turkeys you want to be attracted to your turkey.

Making a Nutter Butter TurkeyOh, this is exciting, my turkeys are getting their tails!  With the melted chocolate all firmed up, it is time to attach the turkey body to the tail.  A little dollop of melted chocolate does the job easily.

Nutter Butter CookiesThis next step isn’t too exciting, just dip one Nutter Butter into some of the melted chocolate and stick it upright at a 90 degree angle to another Nutter Butter cookie.  This will make your base for standing up your turkeys.

When your base is totally firm, you can add your turkey to the base with some more of the melted chocolate.  Put together your turkeys and enjoy sharing them with family and friends.

A Flock of Nutter Butter Cookies

Make a whole flock (or “rafter” if your turkeys are domesticated)!  The more turkeys the better is what I say!  I know I will be making some fun Nutter Butter creations for Christmas, too.
